As Ireland’s leading bus operator in the west of Ireland for almost two decades, we would like to think we know a thing or two about travel preparation. This time of year, we welcome friends – old and new, from far and wide – on one of our most popular tours, the Aran Islands and Cliffs Cruise.
If it is your first time, and especially if you are visiting our shores as a visitor, we do offer some suggestions to ensure your trip is as smooth as the head of a creamy Guinness.
1. Pack for all the elements
Yes, it’s summer. Yes, the weather has been largely agreeable lately, but to use an American expression, that could turn on a dime. Especially when out in the Aran Islands. Hint: there is a clue in the name, WILD Atlantic Way. Better to not need that rainjacket and have it, than need…yep, you get the point.
2. Be punctual!
The Doolin Ferry Company run a tight ship (see what I did there?) transporting passengers from the harbour. It is important that you are at the correct pick-up point going to, and returning from the island. If in doubt, check out the schedule on our tour page here.
3. Bring some cash
While cards are accepted, stranger things have happened where power cuts or electricity outages have cut the island off from electricity. It’s no harm in having some cash spare for emergencies.
4. Don’t act the eejit
I’m not talking about you of course, but please be mindful that you are on a boat in the ocean and 200m in the air, on a cliff edge. That shot-of-a-lifetime selfie really isn’t worth it if you’re putting yourself or others at risk. Also, please be mindful of waste. Seek out bins or store it until you reach the mainland again. We want to keep our beaches clean and protect the beautiful coastline. The dolphins and seals will be thankful!
5. Take pictures!
There will be plenty of opportunities to capture that sheer cliff edge or shipwreck, with guides seeking out the best vantage points and giving fair warning for budding photographers to get into position.
6. Engage!
Pick up a traditional Aran shawl or sweater from the local store. Rent a bike and cycle your little heart out. Sup a pint and taste the chowder in the pub. The craic won’t come to you. You need to go out there and meet it halfway! Eat, chat and be merry!

For more general questions related to the tour, such as – Can I bring my luggage? Are there toilets on the buses? Can I bring my own lunch? – please refer to the FAQ section of our website where you will find the answers to all these queries (and more!).
Above all else, have fun, be mindful of others and please tell your friends about your experience. And don’t forget to leave a review!
