Galway is a city best experienced slowly. Not rushed through. Not ticked off a list. But properly explored – street by street, story by story, step by step.
That’s why, by popular request, we’re delighted to introduce our brand-spanking new guided walking tour, a relaxed and engaging way to discover the heart, history and hidden character of this wonderfully vibrant city we call home.
Whether you’re visiting for the first time, returning for another adventure, or simply looking to see the city from a new perspective, this one-hour tour offers the perfect intro.
A Journey Through Galway’s Story
Starting from Kinlay Hostel on Merchants Road, just round the corner from our offices, our expert local guide will lead you through Galway’s most iconic landmarks – from lively modern meeting places to medieval streets that have witnessed centuries of history.
The tour begins at Eyre Square, the city’s central hub and a place where locals and visitors (and the odd pigeon or two!) gather. Here you’ll listen to stories of Galway’s past while taking in historic monuments, traces of medieval walls and the John F. Kennedy Memorial.
From there, we wander towards the unique statue of Oscar Wilde and Eduard Vilde, a charming symbol of cultural connection across Europe – and an Insta-friendly photo stop for many visitors.
Lively Streets & Legendary Tales
Shop Street is Galway’s main shopping thoroughfare and a busking mecca. You’ll quickly understand why the city has such a reputation for atmosphere. Street performers, independent shops and colourful characters bring the place to life at all hours.
There’s the Pro-Cathedral façade, the site of a tragic chapter in Galway’s 19th-century history, before we head to one of the city’s most fascinating landmarks – Lynch’s Castle.
No visit would be complete without stepping inside St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church, Ireland’s largest medieval parish church. Its architectural details and long history offer a real sense of connection to Galway’s earlier centuries.
The Cultural Heart of the City
We have the culture-vultures covered too! There’s the famous King’s Head Pub, a historic building linked to the execution of King Charles I – proof that even the quietest corners of Galway can hold remarkable stories.
The Latin Quarter positively fizzes with energy, where Quay Street delivers everything visitors hope to find in Galway: lively pubs, traditional music, handmade crafts and an energy that’s hard to describe but easy to enjoy.
The tour takes in Claddagh Village, one of Galway’s oldest communities and the birthplace of the world-famous Claddagh Ring – a symbol of love, loyalty and friendship that still resonates with visitors today.
And how could we possibly forget the beautiful Spanish Arch, a 15th-century gateway that once formed part of Galway’s medieval port? It’s the perfect place to pause, take photos, grab a bite and stroll along the River Corrib at your own pace.
