Seals, dolphins and porpoises, migratory birds, sea birds, red deer, otters, hares and foxes, waterfowl—not all creatures in Ireland are fortunate enough to enjoy a long hibernation! The rest of us have work to do, and none more so than our feathered friends who shut up shop and seek out a well-deserved holiday in warmer climes.
While December means that the weather can be brisk and sometimes unpredictable, it’s a wonderful time to explore the wilder, quieter side of the Wild Atlantic Way and appreciate its rich wildlife.
With the landscape more peaceful and less crowded, you can enjoy spotting these creatures in their natural habitats against the backdrop of winter’s beauty.
Some to Look Out For
Red deer – Ireland’s largest land mammal, the red deer are a protected game species and usually found in woodland or grassy areas.
Grey heron – wetlands, estuaries and along rivers are where you’ll find this large wading bird. Eagle-eyed observers only, mind you. They can be very hard to spot, blending into their natural environment.
Grey seal – usually located on remote and generally undisturbed areas, such as the Aran Islands. In fact, seals can be seen all year long, not just in winter. They are often observed off the coast of Galway playing in the Atlantic waters.
Fin whales – for those who are really lucky, there is an outside chance to spot these magnificent creatures within the depths of winter. For suitable sea conditions, these large marine mammals do often like to make an appearance for tourists on the short boat journey to the Aran Islands, so keep an eye out!

If you are interested in looking to the skies for inspiration, you’re in luck. Some of Ireland’s largest birds of prey roost together in numbers, easier to spot in the bare trees. They include the Red Kite, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Siskin, Snow Bunting or the very rare Waxwing.
